About Dr Liesel Porrett

Dr Liesel Porrett is a Specialist Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeon, who has recently returned to Brisbane, with her husband and two children.

Originally from Cairns, North Queensland, Liesel obtained her medical degree from James Cook University in 2010. Following graduation, she remained in Townsville to complete her junior medical training and commenced Adult General Surgical training. After discovering her passion for Paediatric Surgery, Liesel went on to train as a Paediatric Surgeon, passing her Fellowship Examinations in 2021. Liesel’s extensive training included rotations to major centres within Australia, including the Queensland Children’s Hospital and The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.

Liesel has gone on to complete post-fellowship training with the Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstructive Service at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne and a Paediatric, Neonatal and Burns Surgery Fellowship (with a focus on Colorectal and Genitourinary surgery) at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

She has recently returned from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio where she was an International Scholar, in the Centre for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction.

She holds a post-graduate degree in Anatomy and is undertaking a Masters of Philosophy with the University of Melbourne, focusing on the development of multi-disciplinary care for children with complex colorectal and urological conditions.

Liesel was awarded the Murray and Unity Pheils Colorectal travel Grant, in 2022 and the Hugh Johnson ANZ ACS Travel Fellowship for 2024, from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS).

She is also employed by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Melbourne and The University of Queensland, Brisbane.

She is a Fellow of RACS, a member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Paediatric Urology of New Zealand and Australia.

Liesel’s particular interests include Neonatal, Abdominal, Colorectal and Genitourinary surgical conditions, and she is committed to providing quality paediatric surgical care for all patients and their families. 

Paediatric Surgeons diagnose, treat and manage children’s surgical needs including:

  • Antenatal counselling for congenital anomalies of the skin, head, neck, chest and abdomen

  • Surgery for head and neck pathologies such as thyroglossal and neck cysts, lymph gland enlargement and infections

  • Surgery for abnormalities of the groin in childhood and adolescence which includes undescended testes, hernias, hydroceles, varicoceles and foreskin abnormalities

  • Surgery for Urological Conditions including hypospadias and surgical correction of abnormalities of the kidney and bladder

  • Diagnosis and surgical care of tumours except brain and bone

  • All other general surgical procedures for children from laparoscopic appendicectomy to excision of various lesions and cysts and repair of lacerations and abdominal pain diagnoses.
